Strong Enough for the Things I Love
Author: Farmer Kelley

I started a push-up challenge.
Not because I’m particularly excited about doing push-ups. I already sling 40-pound boxes of meat and 50-pound bales of hay around pretty easily.
But I do love the fact that I can still pick up any of my grandkids.
And recently, I learned I can even rescue a 130-pound Murphy when he gets himself into a pickle.
You have to remember, Murphy is a farm dog. Aside from maybe a step or two here and there, he has never really had to deal with stairs.
So imagine my surprise when I found him at the bottom of the basement stairs.
Once I realized he hadn’t fallen and wasn’t hurt, it occurred to me that he was simply afraid to go back up.
I’m not saying it was easy, but I carried him to the top.
That little moment made me think.
I don’t really care about “working out” just for the sake of working out, and I’m not training for some big event.
I want to stay strong enough to keep doing the things I love.
To work on the farm.
To lift a grandchild.
To carry a bale of hay.
And apparently, to rescue Murphy from the basement.
So I gave myself a push-up challenge.
Not for a number on a scale. Not for a fitness goal.
Just to keep doing the things that matter to me for as long as I can.
What have you made time for in your day to take care of yourself?
Warmly,
Farmer Kelley
