The Minister's Daughter and the Farmer
Author: Farmer Kelley
I’ve been following this farm on Instagram called Reverence Farm.
She’s one of those no holds barred. Tell it like it is kind of women. Pretty much the kind of person I strive to be, before the minister‘s daughter in me takes over.
The minister‘s daughter in me likes to keep things positive and easy-going. I think things like people genuinely are good, and want to support local businesses and understand how what you eat matters.
The farmer at Reverence Farm tells you if you don’t start supporting local farms they just won’t be there. And when the next pandemic hits, those local farms are going to prioritize providing products only to those customers that had previously been supporting them. She lays it out that you should be prepared to pay more for food, because there are thousands of acres of corn that were not fertilized or planted this year and a lot of what you eat needs corn for their feed.
I can say that we didn’t fertilize a few of our Hay Fields this year because the price was up five times what it cost last year. And every bale of hay we have made so far has cost on the average 30% more than it did last year between the cost of fuel and net wrap.
I talk to people every day who tell me they can buy meat cheaper at the store. That may be true - and maybe being Certified Animal Welfare doesn’t matter to anyone but me? Maybe meeting organic and regenerative standards aren’t important either?
Maybe it’s taken 15 years for the ministers daughter in me to kick Pollyanna to the curb and adopt my granddaughters mantra.
It’s better to be kind than to be nice. ❤️
