The Quiet Gift of Preparing for the Inevitable

There is a rhythm on the farm that most people don’t like to talk about.

Birth, growth, harvest… and death.

Nothing here pretends it won’t happen. The animals teach us that gently. The land does too. Seasons close so others can begin. It is not morbid. It is honest.

And honesty, I’ve learned, it is one of the greatest forms of love.

As women over 40, many of us have begun to understand this more intimately. We have sat beside hospital beds. We have handled paperwork through tears. We have watched families fracture—not from grief alone, but from confusion. From guessing. From not knowing what he/she would have wanted.

On the farm, we plan carefully because we respect what is entrusted to us. We mend fences before storms. We rotate pasture before the grass is stressed. We prepare not because we are fearful—but because we care.

Death planning is no different.

It walks you through five essential decisions: who speaks for you if you cannot, the kind of medical treatment you would want, how comfortable you wish to be, how you want to be treated, and what you want your loved ones to know.

It is not cold paperwork.

It is clarity.

And clarity is a gift.

When we leave clear instructions, we lift a weight from the shoulders of our children, our partners, our friends. We spare them the agony of guessing. We give them the freedom to grieve without second-guessing every decision.

That, to me, is an act of profound generosity.

There is something deeply grounding about tending to this now—while we are strong, clear-minded, and steady. It is not about expecting the end. It is about living fully because we have faced it honestly.

Out here, when an animal’s life closes, we honor it. We don’t rush past it. We don’t deny it. We acknowledge the sacredness of the whole cycle.

Perhaps our own lives deserve the same reverence.
