Winter Wellness for Women Over 40: Protein, Bone Broth, and Joint Support

Author: Farmer Kelley

This winter, I’ve been thinking a lot about strength—and how differently it shows up for us as we age.

Frozen fingers and muscles that don't flex like they used to remind me that here on the farm, strength doesn’t come from pushing. It comes from being well-fed. I truly believe a large part of that comes from soil that’s been replenished which feeds animals that are nourished, to give bodies what they need to repair and respond. This is the protein that I raise and provide to my community.

Lately, I’ve started taking a small homemade ginger shot in the morning. It’s simple: organic ginger juice, turmeric, a pinch of cayenne, colostrum, creatine, and a swirl of olive oil. Ginger is known for supporting circulation and easing inflammation, and I’ve already noticed something meaningful—my arthritic fingers feel looser, more willing, and less stiff as I go about my day.

It’s the same reason we lean so heavily on soup this time of year. Beef bones or chicken backs simmering slowly in the crockpot, fill the house with that unmistakable promise of warmth. There is truly nothing better than coming in from the cold, boots by the door, and lifting the lid on hot broth that’s sure to nourish us at the end of the day.

If you’re curious about bringing more of this kind of nourishment into your own winter routine, I do have a supply of soup bones available right now—perfect for slow broths that support joints, digestion, and overall strength. I’m always happy to share tips if you’re new to making your own.

This is the kind of strength I crave in the winter — the kind that comes from being tended, warmed, and fed with intention.
